"Breaking it Down: How AMD Responds to Nvidia's Major RTX Super Launch"

Kudos to AMD for making a bold move! Today is a significant day for Nvidia as it unveils the RTX 4070 Super. But guess what? AMD isn't sitting back; it's firing back with a substantial price drop on one of its top graphics cards in response to Nvidia's big release. Is this just a coincidence? Not a chance. The real question is, will this price cut be enough when Nvidia launches the RTX 4070 Ti Super?

AMD's RX 7900 XT is the GPU that's now available at a much lower price, officially listed at $750, with some models going for as low as $710. Initially hitting the market at $900, it never quite stole the spotlight from AMD's other flagship, the RX 7900 XTX, priced just $100 higher but offering significantly better performance. Consequently, the RX 7900 XT found itself somewhat overlooked in AMD's lineup, and its price quickly dropped to $800 and even lower at certain retailers.

While the gradual price decline over the last year somewhat lessens the impact of this recent cut, on paper, the card has gone from $900 to close to $700 in just 13 months. Priced around $710, it presents a compelling alternative to the new RTX 4070 Super, which, as it turns out, lags behind this AMD GPU at every resolution.

However, things take a turn when you throw DLSS 3 and ray tracing into the mix. Testing Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra settings at 4K, with ray tracing enabled and DLSS 3 toggled on, the RTX 4070 Super produced 77.5 frames per second (fps), while the RX 7900 XT averaged 18 fps. Yet, this is more a testament to the power of Nvidia's DLSS 3 rather than the capabilities of the new GPU itself.

The real challenge for AMD may come when the RTX 4070 Ti Super hits the market with new specs and the same $800 price tag. Expected to perform at a level similar to the RTX 4080 (non-Super), it could outshine the RX 7900 XT in every scenario. At $800, this puts the RX 7900 XT in a tricky position — not quite affordable enough to be a steal and not quite powerful enough to be a must-have.

However, if DLSS 3 isn't a game-changer for you, the current deals on the RX 7900 XT are quite attractive, saving you $50 to $100 compared to the upcoming RTX 4070 Ti Super. It's worth noting that, according to TweakTown, this price drop might be a seasonal promotion, so acting fast before AMD changes its mind could be a wise move. The RX 7900 XT is already discounted on Newegg.
