Quad, a magazine printing company based in Saratoga Springs, is set to close its local plant on Duplainville Road by May 4, affecting over 400 employees. The decision comes as part of the company's strategy to consolidate operations in other states due to challenges in the printed media business.
The Duplainville Road plant has been a fixture in Saratoga Springs for nearly four decades, specializing in printing nationally recognized magazines. However, the company has faced difficulties in recent years, grappling with significant declines in the print media industry.
Employees were informed of the impending closure via email on Friday morning, as reported by The Daily Gazette. The communication cited various industry trends, including volume contractions in specific print categories like newsweeklies, which had been a core focus of the Saratoga Springs plant. Additionally, the email mentioned rising postal costs as contributing factors to the strategic decision.
Quad plans to extend relocation opportunities to some employees, while others will receive severance packages. The company is committed to providing up to 120 days of health insurance coverage based on the length of service.
This closure marks the third such announcement in recent months where manufacturers have decided to exit the Capital Region for operations in other states. Essity paper closed its bath tissue mill in South Glens Falls in July, affecting approximately 300 employees. The operations were consolidated in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio, and Alabama.
In another development earlier this month, AngioDynamics, a Latham-based medical device manufacturer, disclosed plans to shut down operations in Queensbury and Glens Falls. While these closures are expected to affect 350 jobs over the next two years, no immediate job losses are anticipated as the company gradually outsources all of its production.
The wave of closures and relocations underscores the ongoing challenges faced by manufacturers in the region, reflecting broader industry trends and strategic business decisions.
