Renowned Japanese Conductor Seiji Ozawa Passes Away at 88
Seiji Ozawa, one of the most esteemed orchestra conductors of his era, passed away at the age of 88 due to heart failure, as announced by public broadcaster NHK on Friday.
Born in China, Ozawa spent decades in the elite circles of top orchestras worldwide. Despite his stature, he preferred to be addressed by his first name rather than "maestro" and was often seen sporting baseball-themed ties during interviews.
Known for his distinctive bushy hair and infectious smile, Ozawa captivated audiences, particularly in the United States, where he served as the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for nearly thirty years.
In 2020, Boston honored him by declaring September 1 as "Seiji Ozawa Day," a gesture that deeply touched Ozawa, who considered the city his second home. Reflecting on the significance of his time in Boston, he remarked, "No matter where I go, Boston is a part of my heart."
Even back in Tokyo, Ozawa maintained his down-to-earth demeanor, often spotted on subway platforms clad in the attire of his beloved Boston Red Sox baseball team, engaging in conversations with admirers.
Despite his immense talent, Ozawa remained modest, stating, "I'm the complete opposite of a genius, I have always had to make an effort." He acknowledged the necessity of hard work in his pursuit of music, admitting that he wasn't fond of studying but recognized its importance in his musical journey.
Ozawa's tenure with the Vienna State Opera was marked by health challenges, including a battle with oesophageal cancer in 2010. Despite setbacks, he remained resolute, undergoing surgery for a back injury and grappling with bouts of pneumonia. Yet, his passion for music never wavered.
In a 2013 interview with Reuters, Ozawa expressed his unwavering commitment to his craft, stating, "I will continue doing everything I have always done, teaching and conducting orchestra, until I die." He epitomized dedication and enthusiasm until the end, leaving behind a profound legacy in the world of classical music.
