"The New Look TV Review: The Rise of Christian Dior and the Fall of Coco Chanel"

The "New Look" collection by Christian Dior, launched in 1947, symbolized a fresh start for fashion in a postwar world. However, the portrayal of Dior and his contemporaries in "The New Look," an Apple TV+ series, feels out of touch with its old-fashioned approach.

Ben Mendelsohn, playing Dior, looks the part but struggles with an unconvincing accent. This linguistic mismatch reflects the series' overall lack of authenticity and depth. Despite featuring talented actors like John Malkovich, Maisie Williams, Emily Mortimer, and Juliette Binoche, the show fails to capitalize on their abilities.

Binoche shines as Coco Chanel, whose collaboration with the Nazis tarnished her reputation. While Dior's story celebrates creativity and resilience, Chanel's narrative reflects cynicism and moral compromise. However, both stories suffer from overwritten dialogue and forced scenes that undermine their impact.

The series' reliance on clichés and staginess contrasts sharply with Maisie Williams' dedication to her role as Dior's sister, Catherine, a Holocaust survivor. While her character's ordeal is depicted with sensitivity, the broader themes struggle to resonate due to the show's shortcomings.
