Thousands of drivers for ride-hailing services and food delivery riders in the United States and United Kingdom are planning to strike on Valentine’s Day due to disputes over pay and working conditions.
In the United States, the campaign group Justice for App Workers stated in a recent blog post that drivers for Uber and Lyft, along with riders for DoorDash, are frustrated with working long hours just to make ends meet. Representing 130,000 drivers and delivery workers across the East Coast and Midwest, the group announced plans to halt rides to and from all airports in 10 cities, including Chicago and Miami, for two hours on Wednesday.
The campaign group encouraged participation from 11 am to 1 pm on February 14, demanding changes from Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other app companies profiting from their hard work. However, no specific details were provided regarding strike action by DoorDash workers.
Meanwhile, in the UK, a spokesperson for the campaign group Delivery Job UK mentioned that over 3,000 food delivery riders are expected to strike for five hours on Wednesday. These riders, primarily Portuguese-speaking, work across various platforms such as Uber Eats, Deliveroo, and Just Eat. The spokesperson highlighted a decline in rider income due to reductions in delivery fees charged to customers by the companies.
In response to the strike, a spokesperson for Uber Eats emphasized the flexibility offered to riders to earn money on their terms. Deliveroo's spokesperson stressed that the majority of its riders were content with the work conditions and benefits provided. Just Eat also expressed taking riders' concerns seriously and ensuring they earn significantly above the living wage.
Lyft mentioned continuous efforts to enhance the driver experience, including introducing a minimum weekly earnings guarantee to ensure drivers earn a fair share of rider fares. However, DoorDash did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
Workers in the gig economy have long advocated for better pay and working conditions. In 2021, Uber recognized a labor union for the first time, allowing GMB, one of Britain's largest unions, to represent up to 70,000 Uber drivers across the country.
