Amazon Faces Action for Allegedly Misleading Sale of Sweets as Ayodhya Ram Temple Prasad
Consumer Protection Authority Asks Amazon for Response Within Seven Days
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), a wing of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, has issued notices to Amazon India over accusations of selling sweets on its platform under the name "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad." The move comes in response to a complaint filed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), alleging that Amazon is employing deceptive trade practices by marketing sweets under the guise of Ayodhya Ram Temple prasad.
After reviewing the complaint, Chief Commissioner of the CCPA and Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh noted that various sweets and food items are being sold on Amazon, claiming to be prasad from the Ayodhya Ram Temple. The Ministry, in a released statement, emphasized that the sale of food products online with false representations misleads consumers about the authentic characteristics of the items. Such practices can lead consumers to make purchasing decisions based on inaccurate information.
The action is taken under Rule 4(3) of the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020, which prohibits e-commerce entities from adopting unfair trade practices. According to Section 2(28) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, a "misleading advertisement" includes false descriptions of products or services that may mislead consumers about their nature, substance, quantity, or quality.
The CCPA has requested a response from Amazon within seven days from the issuance of the notice. Failure to comply may result in necessary action being initiated against the company under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
