Rutgers Beats Northwestern, Stays Undefeated with Jeremiah Williams in Lineup

Jeremiah Williams-led Rutgers Defeats Northwestern Despite Injury

Even an injury to a key player couldn't halt the momentum led by Jeremiah Williams at Rutgers. Despite forward Mawot Mag being sidelined due to "left knee soreness," the Scarlet Knights managed to defeat a short-handed Northwestern 63-60 at Jersey Mike's Arena on Thursday night.

A year after Northwestern dashed their hopes on Senior Night, causing Rutgers to miss the NCAA Tournament, the Scarlet Knights got their revenge against a Wildcats team missing key players. Starting guard Ty Berry was out with a knee injury, and starting guard Ryan Langborg was ejected in the first half due to a flagrant foul.

Rutgers (14-10, 6-7) remains undefeated since Williams became eligible two weeks ago, winning their fourth consecutive victory and improving their record in Quadrant 1/2 games to 6-9. The win places them tied for seventh place in the Big Ten standings if No. 2 Purdue defeats Minnesota.

The Scarlet Knights overcame an 11-point second-half deficit largely due to Williams' contributions. He scored a crucial floater in the final minute and made a vital block on Northwestern center Matt Nicholson. Williams finished with 15 points, five assists, and five rebounds in 34 minutes.

Other key players for Rutgers included freshman guard Jamichael Davis with 11 points and solid defense on Northwestern star Boo Buie, veteran forward Oskar Palmquist with 9 points, and sixth-year senior Aundre Hyatt with 10 points, including a decisive three-pointer in the final minute.

Despite Northwestern's Buie scoring 27 points, Rutgers tightened their defense in the second half, holding him to just 10 points on 2-of-6 shooting. In the final stretch of the game, Rutgers limited Northwestern to 9 points, 1-of-9 shooting, and forced three turnovers.

Rutgers faced an early 10-point deficit but managed to rally back. They responded to Northwestern's runs with resilient play, including a 19-9 run to close the game. A timely three-pointer from Hyatt and a floater from Williams secured the victory for Rutgers.

Next up, Rutgers will face Minnesota in Minneapolis on Sunday.
